Walk Across Texas Teen Style
What is W.A.T.T.S.?

Walk Across Texas – Teen Style!
…Ok, get up and quit being a couch potato. Grab your friends and walk, or run, roller blade, dance across Texas!
Who can do it?
Anyone! Get together with your friends, school organization, 4-H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, church group or even your family!
How do we do this?
It’s simple! Texas is 830 miles from border to border. Your group simply finds a fun and safe place to walk, such as track or trail and you total up the miles that you travel. For eight weeks you add up the miles and see how far across Texas you walked.
Find walking boring?
No problem! Here are some mileage equivalents so that you can do what you enjoy best!
How do I figure out how much I’ve traveled?
Count out loud how many steps you make each easy and add them up in your head for eight weeks…
…Just Kidding!
Get
yourself a pedometer!
What is a pedometer and does it work?
A pedometer is small device that you wear on your waist band. Every time you take a step it counts it and records it for you. Don’t worry, it’s way smaller than your cell phone and probably smaller than a beeper! Oh, by the day, don’t worry about the price, you can find one for under $10!
Why should I do it?
If you’ve been out snoozing, this is your time to catch up on what we know to be way cool!
Physical Activity:
- Takes care of your one and only valentine—in other words, it reduces one’s risk of heart disease!
- Reduces the risk of diabetes—no, you don’t have to be old to get it!
- Reduces cancer risk—what you do now affects your future!
- Keeps you looking and feeling great—we all want that!
When do I start?
Now! Set up your own team or do it by yourself. Check out the Walk Across Texas! website or contact your local Texas AgriIife Extension Service county office.
